IC/OOC FAQ
Hey, what is this?
Hello and welcome to Let's Play A Murder, a short-term murdergame in the style of Dangan Roleplay, Trustfell, Airlocked, and We Could Be.
Wait a minute, I've never been in a murdergame!
Not a problem! What you need to know is characters will wake up in a closed setting they were invited to, and soon be faced with a dark objective: to murder someone and get away with it. Violence, death, and rapid high-pressure CR ensues as the cast dwindles week by week -- but don't worry. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel.
What's the schedule for this game?
This game is loosely planned to run for six to eight weeks, starting on July 6th and ending around the weekend of August 30th - 31st. Depending on how things go, this may be subject to change.
The game itself will run on a 1:1 OOC/IC schedule during the week, with the exception of friday investigations and saturday trials; these will both take place on friday, IC.
Change?
Due to the short nature in which this game is shaping up, this round is intended to be slightly faster and looser compared to other murdergames. Take heart, I don't intend for it to be any less enjoyable!
Are reserves required for this?
Yes! In order to app in, you will require a reserve. Reserves will open Sunday, June 22nd, 11am MST. Applications themselves will open the day after, on the 23rd, or, in the event that reserves are quickly filled, immediately.
What kind of characters can I app?
The short answer is all characters are welcome, so long as they have an established personality and voice (This includes OCs)! There are no gimmicks this round that would deny entry to specific muses.
The longer answer is we would ask that characters being apped are capable of communication, posses a general amount of mobility, and are capable of dying; on top of preestablished, discernible personalities and such. This rule, of course, can be malleable, and we are very open to working with players in order to make a particular character work if so deeply desired.
Let's Play A Murder has no established age limit; instead, a suitability section will be included in the app for players to judge how well their character will fit into the setting. If you're really unsure about whether a character will fit, players are free to ask below, or send a DM to the mods on Plurk or Discord to make a case of it.
Characters will not be banned for canonical associations with, or backstories pertaining to, sensitive topics. We simply ask that players practice discretion and make sure those topics are sufficiently warned for and treated respectfully.
My character is badly injured or dead, can I still bring them?
Of course! Characters will show up whole and healed, at least enough that they can die at a later date. This can also be discussed between player and mod in the event of a special case.
Are there canon caps?
Canons will be capped at 2 characters per canon with a total cast cap of 20 - 24 characters total.
Activity check?
Beginning on week two, there will be a weekly check-in where players must submit two five-comment threads from your character. (That's two threads with five tags from you in them, totally ten comments).
Threads from the previous week log, afterparty, miscellaneous player logs, and public threads with an NPC will all count. Tags from the investigation/trial logs will not.
Regains?
Each week, you will have the opportunity to submit threads of at least ten tags (five from you, five from another player, that is), in exchange for one item from our regain list. Like AC, threads are accepted as long as they are not from the investigation or trial logs, sorry. Your character, ICly, will receive mysterious coins to exchange for items at a specific location.
Regains can include non-gamebreaking weapons so long as they aren't generally able to rip the game in half or declare some kind of instant-win state. Mods reserve the right to final say on whether something is too gamebreaking to bring in, but if you have a specific query, as always, feel free to ask.
Is there memloss?
Not in this round, no!
The part where the murder part is explained
The meat and potatoes of any good murdergame. Each week, mods will choose through RNG (or volunteers looking to get blood on their hands) at least two characters to be involved in the next week's case. Players will have until the end of the day that Monday to respond; if both players agree, a private discussion thread will be made for the players (and mod) to properly discuss how best to splatter these characters against the cobblestones. Who kills who, and why, are up to the discretion of players; the mods are along for the ride to provide info and suggestions (as well as ensure the plot is settled by the deadline).
Players will have two weeks to work out details of what is happening where and compose a list of evidence for everyone else to find; we ask that it be finalized the Wednesday or Thursday of the trial week as it's difficult to play out a murder scene otherwise.
Involvement in cases will be first come first served in terms of volunteering. If something comes up and you need a quick death, we will do our best to accommodate you into a case or otherwise. But if too many people are jumping on the knife right away, we retain the right to unfortunately pass on cases as necessary.
The part where the trials are explained
Trials will be posted around Noon MST on Saturday. All (living) players are expected to participate at least to the extent that shows a character was present; together, they are tasked with figuring out whodunnit and, ultimately, putting it to a vote. If you manage to vote for the true culprit, congratulations! The culprit will be gruesomely executed and you get to go free... ish. If the majority vote incorrectly... there may be consequences.
While there’s no official time limit on figuring things out, if things stretch into Sunday the mods may step in and call an early end to things in the interest of letting everyone sleep. Such an outcome will not count as a misvote or bad end. We want the trials to be an enjoyable puzzle, not a slog. So, if everyone is direly lost, a mulligan can potentially be called so the game continues. Players will be welcome to submit comments and crit about things they feel could be improved in trials so it can be improved in the future. Cases, by and large, ARE meant to be solvable, even if they're difficult.
So is scapegoating allowed?
Not that kinda game, sorry. Pick the right culprit or they go free. And you don't.
I don’t want to die this week, can I opt out of being rolled?
Real life does take priority over fiction. So, if life really is coming at you fast in some dire way, please let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate you. That aside, RNG has no mercy to spare, so thems the brakes.
What's the tone going to be like?
Well, it's a murdergame. There's gonna be murder.
Death, violence, and the emotional fallout of both will be rife in this round, though as previously stated, the game will try to tend towards the optimistic side of the hurt/comfort dynamic these games create. Unfortunately, we can't naturally warn for every single theme and topic that might be associated with a character or trial. We simply as that it be approached respectfully from all sides, and be warned appropriately.
This round specifically will involve themes of widespread destruction, apocalyptic imagery and the healing of such as well as mythological and religious imagery. Also a general warning of emotional and mental manipulation. Things will be warned for as necessary but please keep this in mind.
Anything else?
If you didn't find the answer you were looking for here, please feel free to ask below and we'll answer as soon as possible. You can also message this mod account or ping one of the mods at
Where am I?
This is scorched earth. A place once full of life, now left to dust and ruin. It will be our base for now. I am sorry.
...Why am I here?
I needed your help. This world was ravaged, and I am determined to breathe life into it once more, but I cannot do it alone. That is why I have asked for your assistance; it wasn't my best strategy, but these are desperate times.
You really think we can save a world?
I can't help but wonder...
Okay... but how?
By bestowing godhood upon you. A practice only known to few, and practiced by even fewer.
And we work together... as gods... to fix things?
That's the ideal way this will go, yes.
So I get powers. That's neat. What if I had them before?
You will need to cultivate these abilities. They, much like everything else, won't come to you if you do not train.
Unfortunately, the process that brought you here possibly drained whatever you could do before. It proved difficult for me to even try.
Is there some kind of network I could use?
"Network"... like a fisherman's net?
What about my things?
Your belongings couldn't be brought with you. Nevertheless, I'm sure there is a way to reclaim them. It may take time, though.
And who are you, exactly?
There will be time for introductions later. There are still many threats to deal with; you must be ready, and I must prepare.
